The fan clutch is what tells your engine fan when to spin hard and when to coast. Inside is a temperature-sensitive silicone fluid that engages and disengages the fan based on radiator airflow temperature. When the clutch fails you typically see one of two symptoms — the fan spins all the time (loud, fuel-wasting) or never engages (overheating in slow traffic and on inclines).
